VISA Information

Visas for Taiwan may be obtained from the applicants' nearest Taiwan Embassy or Consulate (a listing of worldwide Consulates may be found here ). Students should apply for a 60-day extendable Visitor Visa. Once they become full-time students at Tunghai, their Visitor Visa can be extended for another two months. After four months of study, students will become eligible for a Resident Visa. Please see details below:

Visa Application Procedure :

Upon receiving an acceptance letter from CLC, students can go to a Taiwan Embassy or Consulate to obtain a Visitor Visa.
The following documents will be required :

  • Application form
  • CLC letter of acceptance
  • Passport (must be at least six months before expiration)
  • Two (2) 2 x 2 inch photographs
  • Receipt of roundtrip airline tickets
  • Application fee

Upon submission of the documents above, the student will be issued a 60-day Visitor Visa. Students should be sure that their Visitor Visa is extendable and has this printed statement, indicating their study at " the school name they plan to study at” After two 60-day extensions of their Visitor Visa and before staying in Taiwan for more than 180 days, students can then go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taichung to change their Visitor Visa into a Resident Visa.

Visa Extensions After Arriving in Taiwan

Foreign students who have a 60-day extendable Visitor Visa must extend their visa   twice before obtaining a Resident Visa. Students should apply for a second  extension at the latest one week before the first extension expires.

Note: Foreign students must study in Taiwan for at least four months before being  able to obtain a Resident Visa. Other Important Visa Information

  • Students should check if they have the following printed on their visas: “ Study Chinese at "School Name" - this declaration will be printed in Chinese,” otherwise after extending their Visitor Visa twice, they will not be able to change their Visitor Visa into a Resident Visa.
  • A student possessing a Visitor Visa is allowed to extend it twice. If a student leaves Taiwan on a single-entry Visitor Visa, the visa becomes invalid and the student will have to apply for a new visa. However, no such action is needed if the student possesses a multiple-entry Visitor Visa.
  • Students should often check the expiration date of their visa because anyone with an expired visa will have to pay a fine and leave Taiwan immediately. (Note: A Visitor Visa is valid for sixty days starting the day the student arrives in Taiwan). If a student obtains a 30-day Landing Visa upon arrival, or there is a “no extension” stamp in the student's passport, no visa extension is possible and upon its expiration, the student must leave the country.
  • According to regulations, students must study at CLC for at least ten hours per week in order to be eligible for a visa extension or change their Visitor Visa to a Resident Visa
  • Within two weeks of receiving a Resident Visa, students must go to the Taichung Service Center on Gancheng St. and obtain an Alien Resident Certificate.
  • Students who need to leave Taiwan with an Alien Resident Certificate need to go to the Taichung Service Center located on Gancheng St. to get a re-entry permit before leaving the country. Otherwise the Resident Visa will be cancelled.
