    • i DPP - Democratic Progressive Party *Chinese & *English
      Democratic Progressive Party
      Ruling party with President Chen coming from DPP since early 2000, developed from democracy and independence movement (founded 1986). Being the ruling party, the DPP no longer openly advocates Taiwan's independence, but still follows a clear autonomous course regarding China.

    • KMT - Kuomintang ("National People's Party" or traditionally known as the "(Chinese) Nationalists") *Chinese & *English
      Kuomintang
      Ruling party for decades under one-party-rule (from 1945 to 1987 under martial law, loss of power in 2000). Favours unification with China sometime in the future, however only under democratic conditions and economic convergence.

    • ˥ PFP - People's First Party *Chinese & *English
      People's First Party
      One of the three major parties in Taiwan together with the two parties mentioned above. Split in 2000 from the KMT under former provincial governor James Soong. Position regarding China basically same as KMT.

    • xWεp TSU - Taiwan Solidarity Union *Chinese
      Split from the KMT in 2001, mainly supporters of former President Lee Teng-hui, who - being a native Taiwanese - followed an increasingly clear course of independence of Taiwan. The TSU was founded with the purpose of drawing Lee's supporters away from the KMT to support President Chen from the DPP. Position regarding China basically same as DPP.

    • s New Party *Chinese
      New Party
      Splinter-party that split off the KMT in 1993. The only party that ardently favours unification with China and the only party that is prepared to accept China's concept of "One country - two systems".

    • ذ TAIP - Taiwan Independence Party *Chinese
      Taiwan Independence Party
      Splinter-party that split off the DPP, because the DPP's course for independence was not clear enough.
